Every week, when you make an egg purchase from us through Kitsap Fresh, we introduce to you one of the animals that calls Happy Grounds home. By purchasing from us, you’re not just supporting a small local farm, you’re also helping care for the rescue animals who live here. These spotlights are a way for us to say thank you, and to let you meet the beloved residents you’re helping support!

Resident of the Week: Mama Duck
Three years ago, a friend of ours took in a dozen Muscovy ducks that had been rescued from a house fire in Silverdale. Having lost his home, the owner could no longer care for his animals and was grateful to have someone take in his flock. Mama Duck spent about a year at our friend’s farm – until one day we discovered her tucked away in the corner of the chicken house, sitting on a hidden clutch of 16 eggs!
Sadly, only 4 of the ducklings survived, and we were asked to take in Mama and her 4 babies here at Happy Grounds. Over the next few months we had the awesome experience of watching a mother duck raise her ducklings into adulthood. We’re so used to seeing chicks and ducklings alone in feed store brooders, and it was a joy to watch Mama Duck teach her little ones how to swim, stay warm, and explore the world!
These days, Mama Duck’s hobbies include swimming, snacking on frozen peas and corn, hunting for bugs and slugs in the garden, and snuggling (on her terms, of course). She’s taken on the role of mother to all of our ducks and chickens, and keeps everyone in line.
If you’ve never met a Muscovy, they’re a little different from your average duck. They chirp instead of quack! They also prefer to perch at night – roosting with our chickens! Muscovies are very easy to handle and their eggs are rich and perfect for baking. To learn more about Mama Duck and our other rescued residents, visit us at http://www.HappyGroundsFarm.com!
